JALEBI Music Flash Story: Kids With High IQs Grow Up to Be Vegetarians (A Personal Story)

I would like to share with you a short personal story that confirms what is written in the article intitled "Kids With High IQs Grow Up to Be Vegetarians".

Due to my karma I did not take birth in a spiritually vegetarian family but due to what I now know to be previous life experiences .....early in my childhood I did not like to eat meat. So I became a vegetarian when I was around 7 or 8 years old....of course my mother continuously tried to make me eat meat because she thought that I would become anemic. But fortunately a good military doctor (my father was a career soldier) told her that as long as I consumed plenty of milk, cereals, nuts, beans, vegetables and fruits then I would be fine! She did not exactly believe him but at least she lightened up on trying to force me to eat meat! : )

My most traumatic experience that marked me for life was when a baby chick that I had befriended on my grandmother's farm during my summer vacation became large enough to be eaten by the end of the summer. She was beheaded and killed by my grandmother......right in front of my eyes! My mother told me that I rushed towards my grandmother to try and stop her....but it was too late and when the death blow fell....I fainted! I will NEVER forget that moment!

So I have been a vegetarian ever since and although I may not be a genius I must say that I graduated Valedictorian of my high school class and was voted “Most Likely To Succeed”! They did not say at what (smile) ....but I guess success was guaranteed in some way or the other!

I went on to college after winning four scholarships...... and now I am an English teacher and translator ....as well as a singer! My health has always been excellent and most important I rediscovered my personal relationship with God about 26 years ago so I must say that my life has been successful in all the things that really matter to me ....especially as far as trying to make spiritual progress during this lifetime on this planet is concerned.

Being a God conscious vegetarian takes being a vegetarian to another…..higher level! But THAT is another ...even more interesting story! If you would like to share your thoughts and comments please do!

All comments and opinions are welcomed. Thank you! (smile)

Namaste! Hare Krsna!

"The smarter they are, the more likely they'll shun meat as adults," British researchers contend

FRIDAY, Dec. 15 (HealthDay News) -- As a child's IQ rises, his taste for meat in adulthood declines, a new study suggests.

British researchers have found that children's IQ predicts their likelihood of becoming vegetarians as young adults -- lowering their risk for cardiovascular disease in the process. The finding could explain the link between smarts and better health, the investigators say.

"Brighter people tend to have healthier dietary habits," concluded lead author Catharine Gale, a senior research fellow at the MRC Epidemiology Resource Centre of the University of Southampton and Southampton General Hospital.

Recent studies suggest that vegetarianism may be associated with lower cholesterol, reduced risk of obesity and heart disease. This might explain why children with high IQs tend to have a lower risk of heart disease in later life.

The report is published in the Dec. 15 online edition of the British Medical Journal.

"We know from other studies that brighter children tend to behave in a healthier fashion as adults -- they're less likely to smoke, less likely to be overweight, less likely to have high blood pressure and more likely to take strenuous exercise," Gale said. "This study provides further evidence that people with a higher IQ tend to have a healthier lifestyle."

In the study, Gale's team collected data on nearly 8,200 men and women aged 30, whose IQ had been tested when they were 10 years of age.

"Children who scored higher on IQ tests at age 10 were more likely than those who got lower scores to report that they were vegetarian at the age of 30," Gale said.

The researchers found that 4.5 percent of participants were vegetarians. Of these, 2.5 percent were vegan, and 33.6 percent said they were vegetarian but also ate fish or chicken.

There was no difference in IQ score between strict vegetarians and those who said they were vegetarian but who said they ate fish or chicken, the researchers add.

Vegetarians were more likely to be female, of higher social class and better educated, but IQ was still a significant predictor of being vegetarian after adjustment for these factors, Gale said.

"Vegetarian diets are associated with lower cardiovascular disease risk in a number of studies, so these findings suggest that a such a diet may help to explain why children or adolescents with a higher IQ have a lower risk of coronary heart disease as adults," Gale said.

One expert said the findings aren't the whole answer, however.

"This study left many unanswered questions such as: Did the vegetarian children grow up in a household with a vegetarian parent? Were meatless meals regularly served in the household? Were the children eating a primarily vegetarian diet at the age of 10?" said Lona Sandon, an assistant professor of clinical nutrition at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.

"In addition, we don't know the beliefs or attitudes of the parents of the children, nor do we know if there was a particular event that led these children to becoming vegetarian in their teens or adulthood," Sandon said.

As the study showed, more women than men chose a vegetarian diet, Sandon noted. "Other research shows that women in general will focus more on their health than men. So, if they believe that a vegetarian diet will have health benefits, they are more likely to follow it," she said.

Given these factors, "we cannot draw any solid conclusions from this research," Sandon added.

Another expert agreed that a vegetarian diet is healthy.

"The evidence linking vegetarianism to good health outcomes is very strong," said Dr. David L. Katz, the director of the Prevention Research Center and an associate professor of public health at the Yale University School of Medicine.

"Studies, for example, of vegetarian Seventh-Day Adventists in California suggest that they have lower rates of almost all major chronic diseases, and greater longevity, than their omnivorous counterparts," Katz said. "Evidence is also strong and consistent that greater intelligence, higher education, and loftier social status -- which tend to cluster with one another -- also correlate with good health."

Introduction by Shirley Marie Bradby (MiraBai Devi Dasi)

It does not matter whether you possess a high IQ or not….everyone can be smart enough to know what is good for them….both materially and spiritually! : )

If you are truly interested in JALEBI Music and its message of transcendental love, peace and harmony…….. then you should know that all of the JALEBI band members are not only VEGETARIANS but we are also SPIRITUALISTS.

As devotees of Sri Krsna we do not eat fish, eggs or meat. Moreover as spiritual vegetarians not only do we respect all animal and other life forms but we also honor and respect plant life by offering all of our vegetarian foodstuffs to God before we consume them. We do this because in the Bhagavad-Gita, Sri Krsna explicitly says, “If one offers me with love an devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit or water, I will accept it.” (B.G. 9.26)

Every religious and spiritual path asks it followers to pray to God in love and gratitude for sustaining our physical bodies and to pray most of all to stay connected with God so as to make spiritual progress.

There are various rituals for different religions and spiritual paths but all true spiritualists know that the real rule of conduct is to act with LOVE and COMPASSION. When your heart is full of spiritual and transcendental love you would never even dream of hurting.... much less killing…… any living entity for any reason….much less for so-called gastronomical pleasure.

Besides….. if another living entity gives up its body and therefore its life….. to sustain ours then there should be at least respect and gratitude on our part, right? And if we can sustain our bodies without unnecessary violence and killing all the better! By becoming a vegetarian a person is at least demonstrating that they are truly trying to practice the love, peace and harmony that the world is saying it so desperately needs!

Where is the love and respect ….and compassion…..when a cow, pig, chicken, lamb, turkey, goat, etc is killed just because they “taste good”? If you think about it….. all animal slaughter is practically premeditated murder. The step between killing an animal because we “need to eat it” to killing other human beings because they have something we “ need” (land, natural resources, money, love, sex, etc) is often a short and quick one. Animal killing decreases our capacity for respect and compassion for other living entities. Think about it. Let’s get and stay….smart!

By the way….. even if you are not inclined to be a spiritualist..... a vegetarian diet .....just considering the material and physical aspects.... is an intelligent move towards a longer and healthier life!
